What are Terp Pearls?

Terp pearls are placed inside of a quartz banger and are used to increase surface area, heat retention and to help spin concentrate inside of a quartz banger. The most common terp pearls are made from borosilicate glass, quartz glass, or synthetic ruby gemstones. 

What are the benefits of terp pearls?

All terp pearls increase the surface area inside of your quartz banger and help create momentum to help spin concentrate inside of the banger. Quartz and ruby terp pearls have much better heat retention (the ability to hold heat overtime) than borosilicate pearls, which allows you to take lower temp dabs and still have a great amount of vapor produced. Borosilicate terp pearls provide an artistic flair and chance for customization, adding a variety of colors and various designs that cannot be made with quartz or ruby.

Borosilicate Terp Pearls

Borosilicate terp pearls are beneficial because they allow a unique artistic approach whereas quartz and ruby pearls are limited. Borosilicate terp pearls can be made from a variety of colors and artistic designs, such as line work, fumed, UV reactive, and milli terp pearls.

Unfortunately, borosilicate glass is not thermal shock resistant, meaning these pearls will eventually break from the stress of being heated and cooled over time. As well, these are typically the most inconsistently round pearls because borosilicate pearls are typically made by hand by an American glass artist.

Quartz Terp Pearls

Quartz terp pearls will not change shape or break over time. These pearls are thermal shock resistant - stress caused by quick temperature changes that result in borosilicate and ruby pearls cracking/breaking over time. 

Terp pearls created from 100% quartz are typically created in a factory that manufactures quartz glass for scientific purposes. The science industry relies on quartz for several applications, therefore quality sourced quartz terp pearls such as our are made precisely and consistently round by machine and will hold heat for a long period of time. Although the heat retention and long-lasting life are great, quartz pearls are often seen as basic since they are clear and colorless.

Able to create slightly more vapor at lower temperatures.

Ruby Terp Pearls

Ruby terp pearls are great for low temp dabs. The vaporization temperature of ruby is lower, allowing you to take lower temp dabs.

The drawback of ruby terp pearls is the time and effort to maintain them. They will require more maintenance and need to be replaced more often compared to quartz terp pearls. Read more below.

What is the difference between a quartz and a ruby terp pearl?

The main difference is that quartz terp pearls are thermal shock resistant, meaning that they will live longer and will not eventually end up breaking. Ruby terp pearls will eventually begin to warp shapes and will crack/break from thermal shock - the stress of being heated and cooled. The process of thermal shock happens regardless of how you use your ruby terp pearl, though there are ways to make your pearls last longer.

Overall, ruby pearls are much more costly to maintain over time as they will need to be replaced periodically compared to quartz pearls. Although the cost is higher to maintain, ruby pearls can produce more vapor at lower temperatures.

We recommend ruby terp pearls for those who are diligent while cleaning and do not mind having to replace them more frequently. Although, if you'd like something you can benefit a lot from but not worry about breaking over time, quartz terp pearls will hold their shape and typically get lost before needing to ever be replaced.

What are milli terp pearls?

Milli Terp Pearls
Milli pearls are hand created from borosilicate glass and require much more time to create an individual pearl.
Glass millis are created by stacking many thin individual rods of colored glass in a pattern that resembles a pattern or image. These tiny individual rods can be compared to pixels on your phone/computer screen - the image you see is built pixel by pixel. Glass millis are created the same way - arranging thousands of very thin pieces of glass, pixel by pixel, to create an image. There cannot be any space between each piece of glass, so the artists need to make each piece as thin as possible. Even a large area of white would still need several thousand pieces of glass to configure - an artist cannot just use thicker pieces of glass. 
Preparation -
As stated before, intricate millis can contain thousands of pieces of thin glass in order to be made. An artist will typically receive a stick of color around 6 or 7mm. He/she will then heat a section until it is hot enough to be stretched down to 1mm in size. Then this thin piece of glass is melted off, set down, and the process repeats. Each rotation typically creates only 2-4 stringers, depending on the artist's style. This is the most time-consuming step because this process needs to be replicated over and over until there are several thousand stringers depending on the size being created. Watch the video below to see the initial process of stacking these small pieces of glass.
Almost finished -
Once the image has been created from assembling the thin glass sticks, (pixel by pixel), the large cylinder needs to be heated with a large torch to fuse all of the glass together. One side of the cylinder will be attached to a suction that will suck the excess air in between each piece of thin glass. In order to melt this large of a section of glass, a very large flame is required.
Once the cylinder has been heated hot enough, the artist must stretch it to a much thinner stick of glass similar to making the individual glass pieces from before. The stretched glass is then sliced thinly into individual milli chips. These will typically be very small, the size of a dime. So the cylinder that was 6 inches wide will be stretched to the size of a dime. 
The final step -
An artist will then slice the stretched out glass milli stick into individual slices. Then, an artist will encase this milli slice with borosilicate clear glass and form it into a sphere.
It takes a lot of skill and practice to be able to keep the image from distorting and being able to create them evenly.
